A statewide VSAT SCADA communication network for a state power grid
A state power-transmission utility's grid ran on an outdated communication backbone that delayed fault detection and outage management. Enview, with ABB Ltd., designed, supplied, installed, tested and commissioned an end-to-end VSAT network connecting 1,600+ remote sites for real-time SCADA monitoring and control - among India's largest utility SCADA networks.

Background
The utility operated an outdated communication infrastructure that limited real-time monitoring and control of its statewide power transmission network. Poor connectivity and unreliable data transmission delayed fault detection, outage management and operational decision-making, affecting overall service reliability.
Enview, in partnership with ABB Ltd., offered a complete end-to-end VSAT communication solution - network design, deployment, testing, commissioning and regulatory approvals. The ability to execute a large-scale, mission-critical communication network across the state made Enview the preferred technology partner.
Solution
Enview designed, supplied, installed, tested and commissioned a statewide VSAT communication network connecting the utility's transmission sites to its State Load Despatch Center for real-time SCADA monitoring and control, engineered with full redundancy for mission-critical uptime.
- 2 × 9.0 m Earth Stations - a main hub plus a Disaster Recovery (DR) Center
- 1 + 1 hot-standby redundant architecture for uninterrupted operation
- 1,600+ VSAT remote sites across the state
- 130+ enterprise routers and 900+ Layer-2 switches
- 100+ BSNL leased lines for terrestrial redundancy
- ABB RTUs and a Cisco VoIP network integrated for data and voice
- Site surveys, IP addressing design, FAT/SAT testing and government liaison for regulatory approvals and operating licenses
Implementation
The network has run as a mission-critical service across the state for around 20 years. It was originally delivered under Envision Network Technologies; in 2019 the engagement transferred to Enview, which has since run statewide operations, maintenance and the redundant communication infrastructure - including the Disaster Recovery Center and 1 + 1 hot-standby systems - that keep the utility's power transmission network online.
